Strategies for Successful Ecommerce Entrepreneurs

Primasia is a leading professional provider of corporate services, with over 30 years of experience assisting companies in expanding their business to Asia, particularly in Hong Kong, China, and other offshore jurisdictions.

Building an e-commerce business is the right move for a majority of companies, after all, it’s no secret that customers are choosing to shop online these days. With a massive customer base to choose from, e-commerce is a smart investment with an unprecedented opportunity for success for aspiring e-commerce entrepreneurs. The key to e-commerce success however, is in your approach. You need to build a strong business model from the very beginning. Here are three areas that you will want to focus on in your quest to becoming a successful e-commerce entrepreneur.

Learn Who your Target Audience is

Don’t waste time and money advertising to everyone, focus on the people your product or concept is aimed at. The people you think are most likely to purchase from you! You need to have a clear understanding of who that is, and then create your marketing strategy.  This will help you tailor your marketing efforts, as well as to better connect with your buyers.

Develop a Strong Social Media Presence
These days there is a smartphone in every hand, and a tablet or laptop likely in the other. Which is obviously one reason e-commerce is so profitable. But it also means that your business must have a social media presence- it's simply a crucial ingredient in best reaching your target audience. Social media is an influencing factor in consumers’ buying decisions, use it wisely to drive up interest and sales.

A Smooth and Seamless Experience
Ensure that your checkout and customer transactions are secure, and provide an easy, streamlined checkout experience for your customers and clients. If customer do not feel their payment options are secure, they will not order-- simple as that. Keep to the 3 S’s: Simple, Seamless, and Secure.

Expanding Your Company? Hire an Amazing Startup Team!

Are you ready to expand your company? When you’re looking to grow your business, you will not be able to do it by yourself-- you’ll need to hire help! But how do you know if someone’s a good fit for your startup team? It’s not always easy to find that perfect person (or persons) that will not only work well with your business model, but also will work well with your management style and current team members. Here’s how to get the best for your business:

Review their resume
When you’re hiring someone for your business, you need to not only read their resume but follow up on it. Talk to former employers, basically ensure they are who they say they are. If you are expanding into Hong Kong or China, this is a great opportunity to take advantage of Primasia’s Business Matching services, which assist in the sourcing of a Business Partner.

How do they handle pressure?
Some people do their best work when under short deadlines and high pressure situations. Other… pretty much fall apart. When you are building a startup you need solid partners who handle pressure well. Try giving the person an “impossible task”. For example; tell them to write about why you should hire them in at least 2,000 words typed in under 30 minutes and leave the room. When you return to the room, take note of how the person has reacted to the task. By testing someone in a high pressure situation, you’ll learn a lot about them.

Figure out what positions you are hiring for
While the previous two situations focused on the employee, this one’s on you. Before you even start interviewing, take a moment to define who and what you are looking for. It can be easy to get so caught up in the hiring process that you end up hiring the wrong person or hiring too many people for the same position. You need to ensure that your business is productive, that there is the right amount of people for the amount of work you have to give. Too many people and not enough work is a definite drain on a bank account!

Do you need one Graphic Designer, one Account Manager, and two Sales People? Take note of the work you need to be done, and clearly define what and how many positions you need to hire for to accomplish this. Remember, you can always hire more people later on if needed.

Is marketing your first priority? Here's why it should be

From the smallest startup to the largest corporation, most companies understand that marketing is important, but few recognise marketing should be a top priority.

The majority of businesses focus on lead generation as their top marketing objective, while lead generation is important, there is much more to a marketing-first approach. A good marketing team not only empowers their sales team to do their jobs, but understands what their target consumers want, how the company can meet those needs, and how to communicate that message to the end users. In essence, a marketing-first approach to business ensures that the products and services the company offers are relevant to their target audience. The best marketing-first companies create brands that do more than focus on lead generation, they take initiative and drive competitiveness and success.

To implement a marketing-first approach, start by having your business leaders (managers) recognize that marketing is a top priority. Work as a team to launch marketing projects focused at influencing sales, creating positive consumer experiences, and build your brand name. Ensure other departments take marketing seriously by linking marketing efforts to clear objectives, like ROI, customer behavior, and, where applicable, revenue itself. When marketing carries hard targets other departments will pay more attention and become more willing to assist in marketing enablement.

Encouraging collaboration between sales and marketing can lead to increased revenue and boost in brand visibility-- which leads to customers having a higher sense of brand awareness. They remember you! Collaboration between these two departments is more than a trendy concept, it’s the future of successful sales cycles.

Make Your Small Business Stand Out

Whether you are a startup or a well-established enterprise, Primasia Corporate Services can assist with your expansion to Asia, particularly in Hong Kong, China, and other offshore jurisdictions. As a leading professional provider of corporate services for over 30 years, we offer a large variety of corporate solutions; including trade services, Xero cloud accounting, and payroll management.

Standing out in today’s fast-paced, digital-focused world is no easy feat, but it is especially vital for small businesses and startup who hope to succeed against big business and large corporations. Simply being “locally owned” is not enough to sustain a business long term. Making your small business stand out requires offering services or doing things that larger competitors either can not or do not provide. You must be more than “just” a business owner, you have to be part of your community and build a connection to your customer base.

Here are three ways to help your small business stand out:

Provide excellent customer service
Recently there was an article in the South China Morning Post referencing Hong Kong’s “Time is Money” culture, and how common courtesy has become non-existent. Thus, one of the biggest ways you can differ from your competition is to take an extra moment or two to treat your customers with respect and reap the benefits of building a loyal customer base that will keep returning to your small business. A simple “Good Morning” and a smile can go a long way toward making people feel welcome.
Know your customer base
Understanding your customers is a vital part of effectively selling your product or service and in increasing sales. From targeting potential new customers as part of your social media marketing, to providing the goods and services your returning customers expect, to promoting new items and expansions- the key to success is all in communicating with your customers.
Specialize at what you are truly good at
Try not to be a “jack of all trades”. Focus on what you are really good at and position yourself as an expert in your field. Tell people what you are really good at and stick to it. Often we find ourselves saying “Sure, I can do that.”, and wind up in an over promise, under deliver situation. Instead keep a referral list of people you trust to suggest in the fields that you are not as familiar with. In this way you can perfect the specialties you are really good at, and be  THE expert in town who is the expert to work with.
Since 1987, Primasia Corporate Services has been assisting businesses of all sizes. We are known for our highly qualified and experienced staff, for offering tailor-made corporate solutions, and for our Full China Service- including WFOE, JV and RO set-up, Market Entry Solutions, Bank Account Opening, Accounting / Tax Compliance, HR & Payroll Services, Work Visa Application, and Chinese Company Health Check. Contact us today to learn how we can help your business succeed!
