Expanding Your Company? Hire an Amazing Startup Team!

Are you ready to expand your company? When you’re looking to grow your business, you will not be able to do it by yourself-- you’ll need to hire help! But how do you know if someone’s a good fit for your startup team? It’s not always easy to find that perfect person (or persons) that will not only work well with your business model, but also will work well with your management style and current team members. Here’s how to get the best for your business:

Review their resume
When you’re hiring someone for your business, you need to not only read their resume but follow up on it. Talk to former employers, basically ensure they are who they say they are. If you are expanding into Hong Kong or China, this is a great opportunity to take advantage of Primasia’s Business Matching services, which assist in the sourcing of a Business Partner.

How do they handle pressure?
Some people do their best work when under short deadlines and high pressure situations. Other… pretty much fall apart. When you are building a startup you need solid partners who handle pressure well. Try giving the person an “impossible task”. For example; tell them to write about why you should hire them in at least 2,000 words typed in under 30 minutes and leave the room. When you return to the room, take note of how the person has reacted to the task. By testing someone in a high pressure situation, you’ll learn a lot about them.

Figure out what positions you are hiring for
While the previous two situations focused on the employee, this one’s on you. Before you even start interviewing, take a moment to define who and what you are looking for. It can be easy to get so caught up in the hiring process that you end up hiring the wrong person or hiring too many people for the same position. You need to ensure that your business is productive, that there is the right amount of people for the amount of work you have to give. Too many people and not enough work is a definite drain on a bank account!

Do you need one Graphic Designer, one Account Manager, and two Sales People? Take note of the work you need to be done, and clearly define what and how many positions you need to hire for to accomplish this. Remember, you can always hire more people later on if needed.

Is marketing your first priority? Here's why it should be

From the smallest startup to the largest corporation, most companies understand that marketing is important, but few recognise marketing should be a top priority.

The majority of businesses focus on lead generation as their top marketing objective, while lead generation is important, there is much more to a marketing-first approach. A good marketing team not only empowers their sales team to do their jobs, but understands what their target consumers want, how the company can meet those needs, and how to communicate that message to the end users. In essence, a marketing-first approach to business ensures that the products and services the company offers are relevant to their target audience. The best marketing-first companies create brands that do more than focus on lead generation, they take initiative and drive competitiveness and success.

To implement a marketing-first approach, start by having your business leaders (managers) recognize that marketing is a top priority. Work as a team to launch marketing projects focused at influencing sales, creating positive consumer experiences, and build your brand name. Ensure other departments take marketing seriously by linking marketing efforts to clear objectives, like ROI, customer behavior, and, where applicable, revenue itself. When marketing carries hard targets other departments will pay more attention and become more willing to assist in marketing enablement.

Encouraging collaboration between sales and marketing can lead to increased revenue and boost in brand visibility-- which leads to customers having a higher sense of brand awareness. They remember you! Collaboration between these two departments is more than a trendy concept, it’s the future of successful sales cycles.
